Course Overview: Conventional approaches to working with men are grounded in the concept that mental illnesses like anxiety and depression lead to poor relational skills, as well as inadequate self-concepts and dangerous tendencies toward externalization. Our work treating men has suggested that this paradigm misses critical, gender-based components of socialization, which has resulted in unsuccessful therapy for men who seek counseling to address inadequate relational skills and emotional intelligence.
This workshop will explore the development of mascupathy as a more effective diagnostic paradigm in which we provide men with the tools necessary to create healthy self esteem, build meaningful relationships and emotional literacy, and adequately address problems like domestic violence, assaultive behaviors, substance abuse, and the overall cycle of perpetration and victimization.
Presenter: Randy Flood, MA, LLP is the co-founder and director of the Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Mascupathy (IPTM), a culmination of over a 25-year career creating and developing specialized clinical services that address men's issues, including domestic violence, fathering, and emotional and relational intelligences. He is the co-founder and director of the Men's Resource Center of West Michigan in Grand Rapids, Michigan. With Charlie Donaldson, Flood wrote Mascupathy: Understanding and Healing the Malaise of American Manhood (IPTM, 2014) and Stop Hurting the Woman You Love: Breaking the Cycle of Abusive Behavior (Hazelden, 2006). Randy has conducted numerous trainings for mental health practitioners on working with men in counseling. He has presented at the American Men's Studies Association (AMSA) National Conference and at the Interdisciplinary Conference at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England. His expertise on men's issues has led to many interviews with both national and international outlets, such as the Chicago Tribune and Minnesota's Star Tribune, as well as Voice of America radio, Australia's ABC Triple Hack Radio, Man-Rules podcast, and Saskatchewan, Canada's The Rock 98.5.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain how the perpetration-victimization process is rooted in toxic masculinity.
- Demonstrate how failing to address toxic male socialization as the underlying cause for inappropriate externalization behaviors fails to effectively help boys and men caught up in the cycle.
- Present the features and diagnostic categories of mascupathy and toxic masculinity.
- Describe effective treatment strategies to promote engagement, reduction of externalizing behaviors, and personal development.
