Building Bridges Between Mixteco/Indigenous Families, Law Enforcement and Child Welfare

Overview: This training is designed for social workers, mental health providers, law enforcement and other professionals providing services to the Mixteco/Indigenous migrant communities in California. The Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) has launched a groundbreaking and data-informed collaboration with Ventura County Children and Family Services to better serve indigenous migrant children and families. Participants will learn challenges and barriers that families face in accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services, and recommendations for working with children in mental health and other settings.

Meet Our Presenter!

Arcenio J. López is a Ñuu Savi leader from San Francisco Higos, Oaxaca, México. When he arrived in Oxnard in 2003, Arcenio worked as a farmworker in the strawberry fields. He received his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Accounting from Cal Lutheran University in 2019.

In 2006, Arcenio was hired as the first Community Organizer for the Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP), a community-based organization in Oxnard. He became the Associate Director of MICOP in 2010, and in 2014 he became the first indigenous Executive Director for the organization.  Under his leadership, MICOP has grown and flourished in size, scope and reach; from adult literacy classes to indigenous youth organizing to a community radio station. Because of his work, MICOP is the trusted voice of the indigenous community and a respected partner to dozens of local and statewide agencies.

Learning Objectives:

1.    Summarize two aspects of MICOP’s partnership between Ventura County Children and Family Services 

2.    Explain two results of the MICOP Mental Health Participatory Research Project

3.    List three recommendations for building trust with indigenous migrant communities

Continuing Education Credits

All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance. Participants may also apply for Continuing Education Credits after the event. Course meets qualifications for 2 hour(s) of Continuing Education Credits for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #128590).  The Center for Innovation and Resources, Inc. (CIR) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.  CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. CE Credits will be available after the event for a fee of $20. Certificates for CE Credits will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.
