This training, presented by Dr. Sedique Popal is designed for those in social service and related professions working with Afghan communities in California. Participants will increase their understanding of the languages, religions, and overall culture and diversity within the community and learn best practices for working with families.

Meet Our Presenter! 
Dr. Sedique Popal was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan. He is a professor of applied linguistics in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco and coordinates the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs there. He has been a featured presenter and keynote speaker for many national and international organizations. He has been awarded the Outstanding Educator Award at the University of San Francisco, UC Berkeley Extension, California State University, East Bay and the College of Alameda. His latest publication is A Grammar Book for Teachers (2021).

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Name two characteristics of Afghanistan culture
  • Analyze at least three historical effects of events in Afghanistan on families in America
  • Recite the three levels of Uniqueness in Mental Programming Discuss the three cross-culture skills to use in working with families

Continuing Education Credits

CEs: All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance. Participants may also apply for Continuing Education Credits after the event. Course meets qualifications for 2 hour(s) of Continuing Education Credits for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #128590). The Center for Innovation and Resources, Inc. (CIR) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. CE Credits will be available after the event for a fee of $20. Certificates for CE Credits will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.
