Creating Safe and Affirming Environments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Youth

Although LGBTQ youth face the same developmental challenges as other adolescents, they also experience stigmatization and discrimination as members of an oppressed group. This introductory workshop will provide an overview of the unique developmental challenges LGBTQ youth face, the factors that place these youth at risk of abuse, and their vulnerability to engage in risk-taking behaviors. This workshop will also delineate ways to promote safe, affirming and non-abusive agency environments for participants.

“Do Ask, Do Tell”: LGBTQ Youth At A Crossroad In Its Identity – San Diego

The goal of this training is to clarify and assess personal, religious and cultural views and values regarding LGBTQ youth and young adults. Participants will be given strategies to assist in identifying risk factors, challenges and strengths specific to LGBTQ youth and young adult populations, their families, other caregivers and service delivery systems.

The primary goal of this workshop is to explore the high degree of risk of abuse faced by gay and lesbian adolescents. Due to a lack of information and visibility this group of adolescents faces physical, sexual and emotional abuse at home, school and in society at large.
