Course Overview:  

The child abuse treatment field, mental health services, probation services and schools often identify young people with problematic sexual behaviors. This ranges from sexually abusive pre-adolescents, sexually inappropriate juveniles to youthful child molesters and rapists. When working with young people, male victims of sexual abuse are often identified. These victims represent a population that is significantly under-reported to appropriate legal entities. With both groups, it is important to use effective screening and assessment tools, to identify tested treatment strategies and to refer young people to appropriate services. 

This workshop will examine screening and assessment tools and explain how to use them with a range of sexual behaviors. The workshop will separate normal sexual exploration and sexual reactivity from sexual exploitation. Treatment strategies for each category of sexual issues in young people will be identified. The key elements of these strategies will be discussed and case examples will be used to illustrate their application. The training will also discuss the value and risks of individual, group and family therapy. 

Presenter:  David Love, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder and Executive Director of Valley Community Counseling Services, an agency that has conducted one of the largest research projects on the treatment of youthful sex offenders. He has worked with sexually reactive children and juvenile sex offenders. David Love is currently teaching Mindfulness to elementary teachers in 7 school districts. Additionally, he has a new book "A guide for Families Learning of Their Child's Sexual Abuse Later." 

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least five types of problematic sexual behaviors in young people. 
  • Analyze what makes an effective screening tool and assessment when working with young people with sexual behavior issues and male victims. 
  • List at least three effective treatment strategies for treatment strategies for treating young people with problematic sexual behaviors and/or young male victims. 
  • Give examples of at least five elements that help identify a high-risk youthful sex offender.

This training is FREE OF CHARGE. Participants are responsible for travel, lodging and all meal expenses. Lunch is NOT provided.

Continuing Education:  If you are interested in Continuing Education please apply and pay for credit at the training. Cash, card, and check payments.

  • Course meets qualifications for 5.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, $45, Provider #128510. The Center for Innovation and Resource, Inc. (CIR) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs and LCSWs. CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Participants may apply for continuing education credits (CEUs) at the event. Certificates for CEUs will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.
