Talking with Children About Negative Experiences with Jodi Quas
When concerns have been raised about a child having experienced or witnessed a crime, it is often necessary to talk to the child and find out what exactly happened, when, and who was involved. Even if details of the crime are known, it may still be useful to find out specific details from the child. How children are questioned can profoundly affect whether or not children disclose in the first place and, if so, the accuracy of the information they provide.
The presentation will review strategies that can be used to:
(a) increase the children’s willingness to disclose prior negative experiences
(b) increase the amount of detail children provide about those experiences, and do so in a way that does not compromise accuracy, and
(c) decrease children’s tendency to err in their reports.
A second purpose is to describe ongoing controversies regarding interviewing practices and children’s reporting tendencies so that adults faced with the task of finding out what children know can make informed decisions about how best to question children about alleged crimes.
About the Trainer
Dr. Jodi Quas is a Professor of Psychology, Social Behavior and Nursing Science at UC Irvine. She obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Davis. She has been conducting research for over 15 years and is recognized as a leading researcher and significant contributor to the field of child development. Her research interests include memory development in early childhood, effects of stress and trauma on children’s development, and children’s involvement in the legal system. Specific interests include strategies to improve children’s narrative productivity and accuracy; the effects of stress on children’s memory; emotional regulation and physiological reactivity as predictors of children’s coping with and memory for stressful events; jurors’ perceptions of child witnesses; and consequences of legal involvement on child witnesses and victims.
Course meets qualifications for 5.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #128510). CIR Inc. is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs and LCSWs. CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and it’s content.
CE units are available for a fee of $45, payable at the time of the training.
All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Participants may apply for continuing education credits (CEUs) at the event. Certificates for CEUs will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.

This training is offered FREE of charge.
